Our Heritage, Our Future
Atwea College, formerly known as WEA Hunter (Worker’s Educational Association – Hunter), carries a legacy of over 100 years of community education. Founded on the principle that education should be accessible to everyone, the Workers’ Educational Association originated in England in the early 1900s and came to Australia in 1913. Today, Atwea College continues that mission: education as a force for transformation and community wellbeing.
In 2022, WEA Hunter was renamed Atwea College to reflect our evolution and position the organisation for the future. That future is focused, intentional, and deeply connected to our values.
What We Do Now
Atwea College operates two core programs:
Alesco Secondary College supports young people who haven’t found their place in mainstream schooling. Across eight campuses in the Hunter Region (Cooks Hill, Charlestown, Woodberry, Northlakes, Raymond Terrace, Tomaree, Tuncurry and Abermain), we create safe, supportive learning environments where students build confidence, develop skills, and work towards meaningful futures. Our outcomes speak for themselves: 97% of parents say Alesco brings out the best in their child, and 98% of students feel safe at school.
Learn for Fun brings community-based learning to adults seeking personal enrichment and lifelong learning. Grounded in our Workers Education Association heritage, Learn for Fun provides flexible, accessible courses that bring people together and support learning for its own sake.

Our Commitment
As a registered charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC), Atwea operates in the public interest. We are governed by a Board of Directors elected annually, who set policy direction and oversee the organisation’s strategic priorities. Our Executive Director translates our Strategic Plan 2025-2028 into operational activities, ensuring we remain focused on our mission: accessible, transformative education.
